Frequently Asked Questions

  • Disorderly Drums contains 167 analog samples across 21 unique sounds — kicks, snares, toms, hi-hats, crashes, rides, and noise sweeps. Every sound is multisampled multiple times so each hit lands slightly differently.
  • Every sample was recorded on a vintage Yamaha acoustic kit using era-appropriate techniques, then run through analog gear and tape and processed to match the frequency profile and dynamics of Martin Hannett's production on Unknown Pleasures. The kicks are mid-focused with no sub-bass weight, the snares have that curt crack and hint of grain, and the toms thud with the deep resonance you hear on tracks like "Disorder."
  • No — these are completely original recordings. We recorded a vintage Yamaha acoustic kit from scratch, then processed and shaped each hit to match the tone of Unknown Pleasures using analog gear and tape. We spent a lot of time A/B testing against the original album to get as close as possible, but every sound here is 100% original and royalty-free. You're not getting a rip of the record — you're getting the sound of it.
  • Both — Disorderly Drums is a post-punk drum sample pack, meaning you get individual one-shot WAV files to load into any sampler or drum machine, plus an Ableton drum rack with round-robin randomization pre-configured. Think of it as a complete post-punk drum kit that lives inside your DAW.
  • No — these are acoustic drum samples, not programmed drum machine patterns. Disorderly Drums gives you the organic, live-recorded drum sounds that defined Joy Division's sound, as opposed to the TR-808 or similar electronic drum machines of that era.
  • Absolutely. The dark, roomy tone of this kit translates well to goth rock, new wave, cold wave, darkwave, post-punk revival, and cinematic 80s production. The toms in particular are strong impact elements in any music that needs that era's weight and atmosphere — not just Joy Division-inspired tracks.
  • The included Ableton Live project has the full kit pre-loaded in a drum rack with round-robin randomization already configured — so hits cycle through natural variations automatically. You don't need Ableton though. All 167 samples are provided as individual WAV files that work in any DAW or sampler.
  • The included drum racks require Ableton Live 12. If you're on an earlier version or use a different DAW entirely, no problem — all 167 samples are standard WAV files that load into any sampler or drum machine. That said, round-robin randomization works better in some samplers than others. If you want that same human feel without Ableton, these are the best options: Native Instruments Kontakt and Battery 4 both have excellent round-robin support and are the industry standard for this kind of setup. Decent Sampler is a free alternative that handles round-robin well and works in any DAW. Logic Pro users can get solid results with Drum Machine Designer. FL Studio's FPC has more limited round-robin support, so if you're on FL we'd recommend loading the samples into a third-party sampler plugin instead.
  • Post-punk, goth rock, and new wave are the obvious home — but these samples work anywhere you need drums with character. The toms are strong impact elements in trailer music and dark ambient, the kicks and snares hold up in trip-hop and dark techno, and the noise sweeps work well in industrial and experimental production.
  • Alternate between different variations of the same drum hit rather than repeating one sample — the subtle differences in tuning and resonance between each take do the work of making a programmed beat feel human. The Ableton drum rack handles this automatically with round-robin randomization.
  • Yes. Use them in any commercial release, sync placement, film score, or beat you sell. No credits required.

Frequently asked questions

  • All samples come as 24-bit WAV files. Disorderly Drums and Deadbeat Drums also include Ableton Drum Racks with round-robin randomization pre-programmed. WAV files work in any DAW or sampler.
  • No. WAV files work in Logic, FL Studio, Reason, or any DAW. The Ableton Drum Racks require Ableton Live 12 Suite. If you want round-robin in another sampler, Battery 4 and Kontakt support it natively.
  • Download the ZIP, unzip it, and drag the WAV files into any DAW or sampler. If you're using the Ableton Drum Racks, open the .adg files directly in Live 12 and they're ready to play — round-robin randomization is already programmed.
  • Most are. Disorderly Drums and Deadbeat Drums include multiple round-robin variations per hit for natural feel. Some kits are curated one-shots — still hand-selected, processed, and mixed-ready.
  • These were tracked live — real drums, real rooms, real microphones. The processing was kept intentional and minimal: the character you hear is in the performance and the space, not just the plugin chain.
  • Dry, punchy, room-recorded drums inspired by late-70s and early-80s recordings — Joy Division, The Cure, Wire, Gang of Four. No digital sheen. Designed to sit in a mix that already sounds lived-in.
  • No — all sounds are original recordings and are 100% royalty-free. The aesthetic is inspired by the era, but every hit was recorded and processed from scratch.
  • Yes — 100%. Once you purchase, you can use these samples in any commercial release, sync placement, or live performance. No attribution required, no per-track fees, no licensing surprises.
  • If you download the pack and it genuinely isn't right for you, reach out within 30 days and I'll make it right. Because these are digital files, refunds are handled case by case — but I'd rather sort it out than leave you stuck with something you can't use.
  • If you're making music in the vein of post-punk, new wave, indie rock, or lo-fi — yes, this is the most complete collection you'll find. Nine full kits, 2,400+ samples, and a sound that's specifically designed for that era.
  • A proper 80s drum sample pack should cover a few distinct sounds: the cavernous gated reverb of arena rock, the dry angular punch of post-punk, and the tight machine groove of early electronic music. This bundle covers all three.
  • Disorderly Drums, included in this bundle, was recorded specifically with that raw, room-heavy aesthetic in mind — the kind of snare that sounds like it was tracked in a concrete stairwell.
