Psychedelic Dream Drums

320 Vintage Psychedelic Drum Samples & Loops from 1968

Meet your new favorite weird drum machine.

Psychedelic Dream Drums captures the dusty, punchy, and beautifully strange sounds of a rare 1968 JAX 230 rhythm machine, famously used by MGMT during the recording of their experimental 2013 self-titled album. Think I Love You Too, Death, An Orphan of Fortune, and Plenty of Girls in the Sea.

To isolate its individual sounds, we had to modify the machine to accept MIDI, unexpectedly giving its kick a punchy, almost LinnDrum-like character.

We sampled every drum sound 8 times for natural analog variation, then recorded everything through three signal chains:

  • Clean: Raw, vintage drum sounds.
  • Retroverb: Warm, gritty analog saturation.
  • Amp: Crunchy, blown-out psychedelic textures.
  • The result? A collection of weird, character-filled drums ready for psychedelic rock, dream pop, indie, and lo-fi house.

Multisampled To Feel Analog

This pack is intentionally multi-sampled, not bloated.

Each drum sound was recorded 8 times, capturing subtle differences in attack, transient shape, decay, and energy. What you're really getting is 30 carefully designed drum instruments — each captured multiple times so they behave like real performances instead of static one-shots.

This prevents machine-gun repetition. Your hi-hat pattern sounds human because every hit is slightly different, just like a real drummer. Samplers that handle this well: Ableton Live Drum Rack (racks included), Logic Pro Sampler, Battery 4, Kontakt, FL Studio FPC, Bitwig Drum Machine.

80 Drum Loops. Endless Weirdness.

From authentic 1968 rhythm patterns to completely original psychedelic grooves, these loops are ready to drag, drop, chop, and make your own.

60vintage rhythm loops

Straight from 1968.

We recorded all 20 built-in rhythm patterns from a rare 1968 JAX 230 drum machine, capturing each one through three different analog signal chains:

  • Clean: The raw, authentic sound of the original machine.
  • Retroverb: Warm, gritty, saturated rhythms processed through a Vermona Retroverb.
  • Amp: Crunchy, blown-out rhythms recorded through the Retroverb and a guitar amp.

That's 60 vintage drum loops, recorded at approximately 80 BPM, full of quirky percussion, hypnotic grooves, and the wonderfully imperfect timing of vintage hardware.

Perfect for chopping, layering, or building entire songs around.

20 original grooves. Made for weird music.

20original psychedelic loops

A Little Less Vintage. A Lot More Weird.

We also created 20 completely original drum loops using our sampled JAX 230 drum kits.

These aren't just variations of the machine's original rhythms. They're entirely new grooves designed for modern psychedelic rock, dream pop, indie, experimental pop, and lo-fi house.

From dreamy, laid-back beats to punchy, blown-out percussion, each loop has its own personality.

The loops span a variety of tempos, from slow, hypnotic grooves to faster, energetic rhythms. Every loop is labeled with its BPM so you can quickly find the perfect groove for your project.

SNAREBOY — 124 BPM · SADBOI — 115 BPM · DREAM — 140 BPM · PLOW — 145 BPM · FONDAFLO — 125 BPM · HAUS — 100 BPM · RICO — 117 BPM · TRIBE — 86 BPM

Built for Ableton. Works Anywhere.

Every drum in this pack comes as an Ableton Drum Rack preset with round-robin layering built in. Every time you trigger a drum, a slightly different variation plays automatically—so your beats sound human, not robotic.

Not an Ableton user? No problem. All 240 samples are standard 24-bit WAV files, fully compatible with Logic, FL Studio, Pro Tools, Reaper, Kontakt, and any other DAW or sampler you use.

No! The WAV samples and loops work in virtually any DAW. Ableton Live is only required to use the three included Ableton Drum Racks.
The 60 original vintage rhythms were recorded at approximately 80 BPM directly from the JAX 230. Because the machine runs on its own internal timing, the recordings may drift slightly. You can use your DAW's time-stretching or warping tools to align them with your project.
Psychedelic rock, dream pop, indie, bedroom pop, experimental pop, and lo-fi house. The sounds are especially useful for producers looking for vintage drum machine character similar to early rhythm boxes like the Roland CR-78.
