8-Bit Guitar Tapes – Lo-Fi Guitar Chords with Tape & 8-Bit Warmth

8-Bit Guitar Tapes is a truly unique sample pack delivering the soulful harmonies of guitar chords, filtered through 8-bit lo-fi grit and analog tape vibes. This pack provides a library of 672 guitar chord one-shots – yes, six hundred seventy-two – each oozing with nostalgic character. If you produce lo-fi hip hop, dream pop, shoegaze, vaporwave, or any genre that craves hazy, warbly guitar textures, this is your secret weapon for instant vibe.

  • Massive Chord Library: 96 different guitar chord strums (covering major, minor, major7, minor7 for all 12 root notes) were recorded, and then processed 4 unique ways – giving you a total of 672 one-shot chord samples. You have every common chord quality at your fingertips, great for dragging into a sampler and easily crafting your own chord progressions without a guitar.

  • Analog + 8-Bit Signal Chain: We used an American Fender Telecaster for pristine tone, ran it through a Roland JC-40 amp (clean, no mic – direct out for clarity), then got creative. Each chord was sampled into a Casio SK-1 8-bit keyboard for crunchy lo-fi flavor, and further warmed up with real tape echo hardware (EchoFix EF-X2). This blend of 8-bit downsampling and tape saturation gives every chord an authentic aged, warbly sound that’s impossible to fake.

  • 4 Versions of Each Chord: For maximum versatility, every chord comes in four timbres: Hi-Fi Clean (the direct guitar recording with a touch of amp vibrato), Lo-Fi (SK-1) (downsampled an octave for gritty texture, then resampled back up to original pitch for a perfectly imperfect sound), Lo-Fi + Tape (the SK-1 version printed to analog tape for extra warmth and compression), and Lo-Fi + Tape Echo (tape-processed chords further enriched with lush tape echo tails). Stack or alternate these layers to create dynamic, evolving atmospheres.

  • Ready-to-Play One-Shots: Unlike loops that lock you in, these are one-shot samples – drop any chord into your sampler (Ableton Simpler, Fruity Slicer, etc.) to play melodies or progressions in any rhythm and tempo. Or sequence them as is for authentic strummed chords that you can fully control. 100% royalty-free and provided as high-quality 44.1kHz/24-bit WAV, they’ll work in any DAW or hardware sampler.

  • Endless Lo-Fi Inspiration: Use 8-Bit Guitar Tapes to add instant nostalgia to your beats – dreamy jazz chords for lo-fi hip hop, washed-out strums for ambient and chillwave, or shoegaze-style layers in an indie track. The combination of guitar + 8-bit is perfect for vaporwave and retro video game influenced beats too (hello, Nintendo vibes!). Each chord drips with vibe straight out of the box – just add a touch of reverb and you’re in lo-fi heaven.

What’s Inside?

To break it down, here’s exactly what you get in 8-Bit Guitar Tapes:

  • Chord Types Covered: Major, Minor, Major 7th, Minor 7th – for every root note (A through G#). That’s 4 chord qualities × 12 keys = 48 chord shapes, and we recorded two voicings of each chord for natural variation (that brings it to 96 original recordings). All chords were recorded in standard tuning, bright Telecaster tone, giving you a familiar harmonic palette to work with.

  • 4 Versions per Chord: As mentioned, each of those 96 chords has four distinct processed versions:
Clean DI – The direct input guitar chord with subtle amp vibrato, no lo-fi processing (pristine but still warm).
Lo-Fi SK-1 – Chord sampled into the Casio SK-1 at a medium pitch, then the SK-1’s output pitched an octave down (introducing crunchy aliasing and artifacts), then resampled back up to the original pitch. This retains the SK-1’s 8-bit grime while being in the correct key – a special technique we used to maximize character.
Lo-Fi + Tape – The above SK-1 chords recorded to analog tape (using a Tascam deck) for added saturation, glue, and a touch of wow/flutter. These have a mellower attack and a softly compressed tail.
Lo-Fi + Tape Echo – The tape-recorded chords sent through an EchoFix Tape Echo unit, adding spacious analog delay tails and pitch-warbled repeats. These are fantastic for introspective, ambient vibes or layering behind the dry chords for an almost pad-like quality.

  • Total Files: 96 chord strums × 4 versions = 384 samples, but remember we double-recorded chords for variation, bringing the total to 672 WAV files. It might seem huge, but we’ve organized them by key and type, so finding the right chord is easy. Importantly, each chord one-shot is trimmed to just the sustain (with no long silence after) and labeled with its chord name, version, and BPM of original strum (most are around 90 BPM strum so you know the natural decay).

With this extensive collection, you can construct virtually any chord progression commonly heard in jazz-influenced lo-fi or dreamy indie music. For example, want a I–IV–VII–III progression in C minor? You have Cmin, Fmin, Bb7, and Ebmaj7 all ready to go – in multiple textures! Just load them onto separate pads or keys and trigger away.

Why We Made This Pack

As producers and songwriters ourselves, we often craved quick access to interesting chord voicings to spark ideas. Sometimes you want the feel of strummed guitar chords in a track, but maybe you’re not a guitarist – or you want a flavor that a normal guitar can’t produce. That’s why we created 8-Bit Guitar Tapes. We took the time to play dozens of chords on a quality guitar, so you don’t have to. And by processing them through our favorite lofi tools (SK-1 and tape), we turned them into instant vibe-chords.

This pack was made by an artist, for artists. We use these chords in our own productions to quickly test out chord progressions, try new harmonies, or layer under a synth pad for extra warmth. It’s a time-saver and inspiration generator in one. And frankly, no one else is making guitar sounds like this, so we had to do it ourselves!

Who Is This Pack For?

Lo-Fi Hip-Hop & Boom Bap Producers: Drop in a jazzy 7th chord with that crunchy 8-bit/tape tone to instantly elevate your beat. Chop or rearrange the chord hits to create new rhythms – you’ll get that Boards of Canada meets J Dilla vibe easily.

Dream Pop & Shoegaze Artists: These chords, especially the tape echo versions, create lush, hazy atmospheres perfect for dreampop, shoegaze, or post-rock. Slap a big reverb on the tail and you’ve got an instant wall-of-sound backdrop. They sit beautifully under vocals or as interludes between sections.

Vaporwave & Chillwave Creators: Nothing says nostalgia like detuned, bit-crushed guitar chords. The SK-1 processing gives you genuine 16-bit console era textures – think loading up an old JRPG save file and hearing that bittersweet background music. Vaporwave producers can use the major 7th chords for that melancholy yet serene mood.

Indie & Experimental Producers: If you make indie rock or experimental pop (we certainly do!), these chords can be the secret sauce that sets your track apart. Layer a clean DI chord with its lo-fi tape echo version – it’s instant chills. You get the uniqueness of a heavily processed sound, but the familiarity of a musical guitar chord. We ourselves plan to plaster these all over our next album!
