The Same Gear. The Same Techniques.

We didn't guess our way to this sound. We used the actual drum machines Tame Impala used on the album.

Vermona DRM1 MKIV

The backbone of the pack. Odd, musical, imperfect, and alive. This machine defines the Deadbeat drum character more than anything else.

Roland TR-1000

Used for tighter, punchier hits where the groove needs to lock in. Contrast to the Vermona's looseness.

70s Fiberglass Pearl Kit

Paired with a Ludwig Supraphonic snare and Zildjian hi-hats. Recorded dry and controlled so acoustic hits layer with machines without overpowering them.

Vermona Retroverb Lancet

Spring reverb isn't an effect here — it's part of the instrument. Adds unstable, splashy movement that no plugin recreates convincingly.

Roland JC-40 Guitar Amp

Running drums through the JC-40 adds midrange dust, subtle saturation, and a physical sense of space without killing dynamics. A crucial part of the character.

Moog Grandmother

Kevin didn't use a Moog Grandmother on Deadbeat — but its synthesized drum tones run through analog spring reverb fit the sonic world of the album so perfectly that I built some custom hits on it and threw them in.

Multisampled To Feel Analog

This pack is intentionally multi-sampled, not bloated.

Each drum sound was recorded 7 to 8 times, capturing subtle differences in attack, transient shape, decay, and energy. What you're really getting is 154 carefully designed drum instruments — each captured multiple times so they behave like real performances instead of static one-shots.

This prevents machine-gun repetition. Your hi-hat pattern sounds human because every hit is slightly different, just like a real drummer. Samplers that handle this well: Ableton Live Drum Rack (racks included), Logic Pro Sampler, Battery 4, Kontakt, FL Studio FPC, Bitwig Drum Machine.

13 Ableton Drum Racks. One Per Song.

Every rack is fully mapped with round-robin variation, performance-ready, and built around the feel and groove of the actual Deadbeat song it's named after. Open the included Ableton session, save the racks to your User Library, and they're available in every project you open.

Not an Ableton user? Every sample is a standard 24-bit WAV file that loads into any DAW — Logic, FL Studio, Kontakt, Reaper, Battery, and more.

The Classic Tame Impala Drum Kit Sound Is in Here Too.

Loser is the track on Deadbeat that still carries the raw, 60s-inspired acoustic drum sound most producers fell in love with first. Those pulsing, organic hits are fully represented here — multi-sampled recordings from a 70s fiberglass Pearl kit, processed to layer naturally with the analog machine hits. Whether you're making psych rock, classic Tame Impala–style tracks, or modern electronic productions, these acoustic drums are the most immediately usable sounds in the pack.

What Producers Are Saying About Deadbeat Drums

5.0 out of 5 — 12 verified reviews

Built for Ableton. Works Anywhere.

Every drum in this pack comes as an Ableton Drum Rack preset with round-robin layering built in. Every time you trigger a drum, a slightly different variation plays automatically—so your beats sound human, not robotic.

Not an Ableton user? No problem. All 1200+ samples are standard 24-bit WAV files, fully compatible with Logic, FL Studio, Pro Tools, Reaper, Kontakt, and any other DAW or sampler you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Deadbeat Drums was built specifically for Tame Impala-inspired production. Every sound was recorded using the same class of analog drum machines Kevin Parker used on the Deadbeat album — the Vermona DRM1 MKIV and Roland TR-1000 — alongside a 70s fiberglass Pearl kit. The result is 1,200+ samples that capture the dusty, saturated, danceable character of that era without lifting a single hit from the original recordings.
Deadbeat leans heavily on analog drum machines — particularly the Vermona DRM1 MKIV for its odd, musical, imperfect character, and the Roland TR-1000 for tighter hits. These are layered with acoustic drums from a 70s fiberglass Pearl kit, run through a Vermona Retroverb Lancet spring reverb and a Roland JC-40 guitar amp to get that dusty, saturated, room-affected tone. Deadbeat Drums was recreated using all of the above.
Yes, completely. Every sound in Deadbeat Drums is an original recording — nothing is sampled or lifted from any Tame Impala release. You get a fully royalty-free license for personal and commercial use including streaming releases, sync placements, and client work. No attribution required.
These samples were designed for indie, psych rock, lo-fi house, dream pop, and post-punk — anywhere the Deadbeat sound fits. The analog drum machine hits work especially well for lo-fi house and danceable indie. The acoustic Pearl kit hits work for classic psych rock and classic Tame Impala-style tracks. Most producers find the two blend naturally together.
The 13 included Ableton Live Drum Racks are the intended experience and make round-robin variation automatic. But all 1,200+ samples are standard 24-bit WAV files that load into any DAW — Logic Pro Sampler, FL Studio FPC, Native Instruments Battery 4, Kontakt, Reaper, Bitwig Drum Machine, and more.
Multi-sampling means each drum sound was recorded multiple times — in this pack, 7 to 8 takes per sound — capturing subtle differences in attack, tone, and energy across each hit. When you trigger the same drum repeatedly, a different take plays each time. This prevents the machine-gun effect (where the same hit repeats identically and sounds robotic) and makes your programmed grooves feel like a real drummer played them.
Open the included Ableton Live session file. The 13 Drum Racks will load — one for each Deadbeat song that features drums. Right-click any rack and save it to your User Library. It will then be available in every Ableton project you open. Each rack is fully mapped with round-robin variation and built around the feel of the actual song.
Most sample packs are genre-agnostic — a mix of sounds that work for everything and nothing in particular. Deadbeat Drums was built around a single reference: Tame Impala's Deadbeat album. Every sound was made using the actual machines from that sonic world, processed with the same spring reverb and amp chain, and organized by individual song. It's a specific sound, not a general-purpose kit.
No. This product is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by Tame Impala or Kevin Parker. All sounds are 100% original recordings inspired by the production techniques and aesthetic of the Deadbeat era. Nothing is sampled from any Tame Impala release.
